    In 2018 volatility returned to mainstream asset classes. The recent October market rout has heightened risk awareness however not all asset classes performed the same. Global Infrastructure outperformed Australian and International equities, a testament to its defensive nature.

    Last week, Sydney Airports announced its first half results increasing its dividend to 34.5c following growth in retail (+14.3% yoy), airport traffic (+7.7% yoy) and parking and ground revenue (+2.2% yoy).  The current interest rate and political environment is promising for infrastructure assets, but while Sydney Airport is good at what it does investors should diversify on geography, assets and management teams.

    Rising rates and infrastructure

    A common dictum of global listed infrastructure that when interest rates and inflation rise these securities underperform. On the contrary earnings from assets such as toll roads are inflation linked and utilities often benefit from regulated price increases which shield the return on assets from the effects of inflation and interest rates.
